Coastal wind in Wollongong and frosty winters in Bowral. We make windows and doors at our Smeaton Grange workshop and install across the Illawarra, Wollondilly and the Southern Highlands.
Updated September 2026 | Local advice from our Smeaton Grange install team

Newage Glass and Aluminium supplies and installs aluminium windows and doors across Illawarra and Highlands, including Wollongong, Helensburgh, Thirroul and Austinmer. Every frame is made to measure at our Smeaton Grange workshop and fitted by our own team. Popular choices here are double glazed window, double glazed door and protilt awning casement window. Measures and written quotes are free, and we reply to quote requests within 24 hours.
The Illawarra and Southern Highlands are close to our Smeaton Grange workshop. Wollongong is reached via Picton Road and Mount Ousley, and Bowral and Mittagong are a short run down the Hume Motorway. On the way we cover the Wollondilly towns of Thirlmere, Bargo and Hill Top.
The Illawarra coast from Helensburgh and Thirroul to Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama gets salt air and strong winds off the escarpment and the ocean. We recommend coastal grade finishes, stainless hardware and the right glass for exposed sites. New estates at Calderwood, Shell Cove and West Dapto also have steady new build work, and we supply builders to their schedule.
The Southern Highlands are a different climate. Bowral, Moss Vale, Robertson and Bundanoon have cold winters and regular frosts, so double glazing is one of the most requested upgrades. Heritage cottages in Berrima, Bowral and Mittagong suit double hung windows, and bushland blocks around Hill Top, Balmoral and Welby often need BAL rated options. In Illawarra and Highlands, the main things to plan for are salt air and wind, frosty winters, bushfire blocks. Here is how each glass option helps, so you can compare before your free measure.
| Glass type | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Toughened safety glass | Heat treated to around four to five times the strength of standard glass. If it breaks, it crumbles into small blunt pieces. | Doors, low windows and bathrooms where AS 1288 calls for safety glass. |
| Laminated glass | Two panes bonded with a clear interlayer that holds the glass together if it breaks and blocks most UV. | Security, street facing rooms and less fading of floors and furniture. |
| Acoustic laminated glass | Laminated glass with a sound dampening interlayer. | Bedrooms near main roads, rail lines and flight paths. |
| Low E glass | A very thin coating that reflects heat, keeping summer heat out and winter warmth in. | West facing rooms and large sliding doors. |
| Double glazing | Two panes with a sealed gap between them. Cuts heat transfer, outside noise and condensation. | Year round comfort, quieter rooms and cold winters. |
| Bushfire rated glazing | Glass and frames specified to your Bushfire Attack Level under AS 3959. | Homes on bushfire prone land. |
Residential windows in Australia are rated to AS 2047 for wind, water and air. Energy performance is shown as a U value (heat loss) and SHGC (solar heat gain), and many products carry a WERS rating. We explain the numbers at your measure.
Send a few photos and rough sizes. We will point you in the right direction before the measure.
